Summary:

Da Han—the Great Cold—is the last of the twenty-four solar terms. The Big Dipper points toward the constellation Chou; the sun’s ecliptic longitude reaches 300°. It marks the transition between January 20 and 21 on the Gregorian calendar each year. Like Xiao Han, Da Han is a solar term that indicates the degree of cold weather. Da Han signifies the peak of winter cold. During this period, which falls within the third and fourth nine-day periods of winter, cold air masses frequently move southward, making it the coldest time of the year. During Da Han, one should continue to adapt to winter’s characteristic of conserving energy and staying indoors. To avoid the intrusion of cold winds, it’s advisable to go to bed early and rise late, balance work and rest, and wear warm clothing appropriate to one’s own condition when going outdoors.
